Manifesta Biennial
Manifesta was conceived in the early 1990s as a nomadic, European biennial of contemporary art, responding to the new social, cultural and political reality that emerged in the aftermath of the Cold War. Since then the Manifesta Biennial has taken place every two years in a different European city. Along with the Venice Biennale and documenta in Kassel, Manifesta is one of the foremost art events in Europe. Each Manifesta comprises a range of activities including publications, meetings, discussions and seminars (the so-called ÔCoffee BreaksÕ), staged in diverse locations throughout Europe and in the neighbouring regions, culminating in the final three-month long exhibition in the host city or region. Over the course of its ten Biennial editions and twenty years, over a million people have visited ManifestaÕs events and participated in its programs. It has successfully presented artists, curators, young professionals, and trainees from as many as forty different countries, and in each edition continues to innovate and reimagine contemporary art practices. Manifesta Biennial editions - Rotterdam (1996), Luxembourg (1998), Ljubljana (2000), Frankfurt (2002), San Sebastian (2004), Nicosia (2006 - cancelled), Trentino-South Tyrol (2008), Murcia in dialogue with northern Africa (2010), Genk, Limburg, Belgium (2012), St Petersburg (2014) and Zurich (2016). The forthcoming 11th edition of the Manifesta Biennial will be jointly hosted by the Manifesta Foundation and the City of Zurich in the Summer of 2016.
