Yaji / yah-jee / noun / a ground assortment of aromatic spices, often kept secret and passed down through generations. You may know it as “suya pepper” but Yaji is the proper name for this approachable and addictive spice blend. Ask most Africans about their first experience with yaji, and you’re sure to get an earful – and if you’re very lucky, a pinch of it — to try for yourself. A savory concoction of zesty pepper flakes, dried ginger, aromatic cloves, ground peanuts and a pinch of salt that symbolizes many African’s first memories of delicious food, yaji is a pungent spice full of stories and secrets as personal as one’s own fingerprint. The irony in yaji is that, while the exact ingredients are secretly passed down through generations by Mai suya’s and gurus in-the-know, this undeniably African seasoning is best celebrated and shared in the company of others. Like its namesake, YajiBox was created to break traditional African ingredients out of their private cookbooks and personal pantries. In doing so, we aspire to introduce Africa’s tapestry of cultures to the world, and the richness they bring to the universal experience of making and eating delicious food. Founded in 2015 out of one frustrated foodie’s not-so-secret desire to spice up her regular rotation of meals (without combing through hundreds of bookmarked blogs), YajiBox is now the simplest way to search for inventive new recipes, connect with other foodies, and learn about the authentic ingredients that encompass true African food. Equal parts contributor-based community, curated recipe collection, and ingredient index, YajiBox is a discovery tool that introduces you to the many faces and flavors that define African food. Our authors are real foodies and food bloggers that not only live to eat and eat to live, but love to feed their family, friends, and neighbors the dishes that celebrate the cultures that feed their creativity in and out of the kitchen.
